Abstract

The development of IoT systems and the spread of the smart city concept have been significant over the last decade. Smart campuses, seen as a significant part of smart cities, represent ideal testbeds for experimenting with new technologies before they are implemented on a larger scale. The concept of smart campuses has recently entered the technological field of urban governance and is finding increasing application in the context of smart buildings as well. Despite progress, the smart campus concept is still in its early stages. There are barriers and limitations, as well as challenges related to technology integration, standardization, interconnection of data and processes, and the lack of a standard development model. In this paper, we propose an architecture for a smart campus aimed at addressing these challenges and increasing energy efficiency and comfort for a healthy learning environment. The proposed architecture is based on open-source FIWARE components to facilitate data integration from different sources and ensure interoperability. © 2025 The Authors.
