On 19 December 2025, during an official ceremony held at the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies (ULSIT), the EXCELLCITY project (BG-RRP-2.005-0003) was awarded the prestigious “Project of the Year” distinction.
The award recognizes EXCELLCITY’s leadership in innovation and its significant contribution to the strategic development of ULSIT. The project was commended for its consistent efforts, clear long-term vision, and the achievement of sustainable and impactful results.
The distinction was jointly accepted by Prof. Roumen Nikolov, PhD, and Prof. Eugenia Kovatcheva, PhD, who expressed their sincere appreciation to the entire project team for their professionalism, dedication, and effective collaborative work throughout the project’s implementation.
This recognition highlights the collective commitment of the EXCELLCITY team to advancing innovation, ensuring quality, and promoting sustainable development within the academic and research community.

The ExcellCity Winter School 2025, held from October 27 to 31, 2025, at the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies (ULSIT) in Sofia, brought together distinguished academics, researchers, and students from across Europe for an intensive five-day training dedicated to “Big Data, Agentic AI & Microservices for Smart and Secure City Environments.”
Organized in collaboration with the University of Murcia (Spain) and the University of Messina (Italy), the Winter School served as a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange, research collaboration, and innovation in the field of smart and secure urban ecosystems.
Day 1 – Opening and Foundations
The event opened with welcoming remarks from ULSIT’s academic leadership, setting an inspiring tone for the week ahead.
Lectures introduced participants to the evolution of the FIWARE platform, applications of Artificial Intelligence, and security in digital environments, laying the groundwork for deeper exploration in the following days.
Day 2 – IoT, AI, and Smart Environments
The program continued with expert-led sessions focused on the intersection of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, Artificial Intelligence, and data security.
Highlights included the lecture “IoT and AI for Smart Agro” by Prof. Antonio Skarmeta (University of Murcia, Spain), and a practical workshop on Security in FIWARE.
Participants also engaged in hands-on activities connecting IoT sensors and creating digital twins for smart city applications.
Day 3 – Big Data Analytics and Cloud Orchestration
Day 3 featured an advanced module on Big Data management and cloud-edge orchestration led by experts from the University of Messina (Italy).
Prof. Antonio Celesti presented “Advanced Big Data Warehouse with OLAP”, exploring modern techniques for large-scale data analysis, while Prof. Maria Fazio introduced participants to “Orchestration of Resources in the Cloud and at the Edge.”
Hands-on sessions on Big Data Analytics and Kubernetes provided participants with practical skills to deploy scalable solutions for smart environments.
Day 4 – Research, AI, and Edge Analytics
The fourth day centered on research presentations and academic exchange, showcasing PhD projects and discussions moderated by Prof. Massimo Villari, Prof. Maria Fazio, and Prof. Antonio Celesti from the University of Messina.
Afternoon sessions focused on AI-based workflows in distributed systems and Edge Analytics, encouraging collaboration and idea-sharing in a dynamic academic atmosphere.
Day 5 – Agentic AI and Closing Ceremony
The final day of the Winter School highlighted cutting-edge developments in Agentic AI, Big Data in practice, and AI inference models at the Edge, with lectures delivered by Prof. Massimo Villari and Prof. Antonio Celesti.
The event concluded with a roundtable discussion dedicated to future research initiatives and joint academic projects, reinforcing the strong partnership among the participating universities.
Fostering Collaboration and Innovation
Throughout the week, participants explored how Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and microservice architectures can transform urban environments into smarter, safer, and more sustainable cities.
The Winter School successfully strengthened collaboration between ULSIT, the University of Murcia, and the University of Messina, promoting interdisciplinary research and fostering the next generation of innovators in smart city technologies.

The ExcellCity project team is currently participating in the 17th International Conference TELSIKS 2025 – Advanced Technologies, Systems and Services in Telecommunications, held in Niš, Serbia (October 22–24, 2025).

During the Poster Session “Information and Communications Technologies”, the team is presenting project results on the topic:
“Cybersecurity in Smart Cities: A Review of Theoretical Models, Emerging Threats, and Defense Strategies.”

The authors of the paper are Genadiy Gospodinov, Lyubomir Gotsev, Georgi Dimitrov, Eugenia Kovatcheva, Tamara Ristovska, and Mariyan Familiyanov, with Genadiy Gospodinov as the presenter.

The presentation highlights key findings and recommendations for enhancing cybersecurity in smart cities – part of the innovative outcomes developed within the ExcellCity project.

TELSIKS brings together researchers and experts from around the world to discuss the latest trends in telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and smart city technologies.

Lisbon, Portugal – July 9-10, 2025 – The ExcellCity project proudly participated in the inaugural International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education, a landmark event held at the ISEC Higher Institute of Education and Sciences in Lisbon. This dynamic forum, jointly chaired by Maria José Sousa of ISCTE and Kevin J. Vaughn of the University of California, Riverside (UCR), brought together global pioneers to explore the transformative power of AI in learning and teaching.
The conference was a beacon for innovation, fostering crucial dialogues and collaborations that will shape the future of AI-enhanced education. ExcellCity seized this unique opportunity to contribute to the cutting-edge discussions, particularly highlighting the intersection of AI in education with the development of Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, a core focus of our project.
The program was expertly structured around six compelling thematic streams, delving into both the practical applications and ethical considerations of AI in education. ExcellCity's engagement was particularly relevant to discussions on:
● Artificial Intelligence in Education: Exploring how AI can personalize learning, empower educators through intelligent tutoring systems, and automate assessments, directly aligning with ExcellCity's commitment to smart educational solutions within urban environments.
● Educational Technologies: Examining how cutting-edge tech solutions enhance engagement and learning outcomes, offering a platform for ExcellCity to share insights on digital transformation for urban education.
● New Pedagogies: Reimagining education through innovative approaches, where ExcellCity's vision for smart cities naturally extends to fostering critical thinking and student agency in AI-enhanced learning spaces.
● AI and Ethics: Tackling crucial questions of fairness, privacy, and transparency in AI systems, echoing ExcellCity's dedication to developing trustworthy, human-centred AI tools that respect the rights and dignity of citizens in smart cities.
● AI-Driven Global Education: Highlighting how AI can support international learning, cultural exchange, and accessibility, a key aspect of building interconnected and inclusive smart urban communities.

На 23–24 април 2025 г. Университетът по библиотекознание и информационни технологии (УниБИТ) беше домакин на практическия семинар „FIWARE IN ACTION“, част от проекта ExcellCity: WIRED FOR TOMORROW. Събитието събра международни експерти от технологичната платформа FIWARE, които представиха водещи иновации в интеграцията на IoT системи, визуализацията на данни в реално време и автоматизацията чрез платформи като Node-Red, Grafana и ROS2.

Място: зала 211, УниБИТ, бул. „Шипченски проход“ №69А, София, България

Дати: 23–24 април 2025 г.

По време на семинара участниците имаха възможност да се запознаят с:

  • достъпа до платформата FIWARE и работата с Node-Red за свързване на сензори;
  • визуализация на IoT данни в реално време с Grafana;
  • приложението на FIWARE в роботиката и системата ROS2;
  • принципите на edge computing, протоколите за свързаност и използването на FIWARE Catalogue и ETL инструменти.

Събитието се отличи с интензивна работна атмосфера, иновативни демонстрации и оживени дискусии за бъдещето на умните градове и цифровата трансформация.
